What is Reiki Massage?

You may have heard of a new modality called Reiki Massage, which combines Massage and Reiki.

There are different ways in which practitioners use these two modalities, and it’s worth knowing the difference.

Different therapists use their modalities differently. For example, some Reiki therapists do a complicated routine including crystals, colours and energetic medicine and call this Chakra Balancing. Others see Chakra Balancing simply as a way to balance the energy between two chakras, and they may just put one hand on each and visualise or draw a Balance Symbol.

Yet, if you’ve been to see a practitioner who works a certain way, you are likely to think that that is the only way this is done.

The trouble with modalities like Reiki is that there isn’t a lot of regulation. Yes, there is a professional organisation supporting Reiki therapists (Reiki NZ), and they have created guidelines for Reiki practitioners and workshops. However, almost every Reiki practitioner and Master has their own views and ideas on how to use and share the energy.

Massage incorporating Reiki

This is where the practitioner gives you a massage, and channels Reiki at the same time. Their hands are moving most of the time, and they trust and intend for the Reiki energy to flow into your body and energy field at the same time as you are getting a physical massage (i.e. the therapist moves your tissues, with or without oil).

This kind of treatment is very relaxing, because the therapist often uses big, broad strokes and moves slowly to allow the energy transfer.

Occasionally, they may rest their hands in a particular spot if guided to do so.

This combination of modalities moves toxins in your body and in your energy field, and you may feel wiped out for a couple of hours after the treatment. This is because your body is going into rest and digest mode, fixing and relaxing and releasing anything you no longer need.

You may be surprised how different this is from ‘just’ having a massage!

This treatment is not the same as a massage from a practitioner who has also learned to do Reiki. Yes, the Reiki may still flow, but energy follows intent, and so the Reiki Massage is really a double therapy.

Reiki incorporating Massage

Sometimes, practitioners are more tuned into the energy aspect of such a treatment. They may receive guidance or intuition about where to place their hands, and may start massaging (moving the tissues), or making other kinds of movements on your body or in your energy field.

If this is the kind of treatment that you are after, it is worth discussing with the therapist what that might look like, and where you are and are not comfortable being touched. Especially if you’ve experienced trauma – and there are a surprisingly small number of people who haven’t -, it will help you to feel safe if you establish the boundaries before the treatment.

This particular mix of modalities can be done fully clothed, or just like traditional massage, unclothed and with oil.

It’s probably a good idea to take some time to think about, and talk about, what you would like from this treatment.

Why have Reiki Massage?

Reiki Massage is for those who are feeling that they are ready to release old energies, or who feel they really need an energy treatment, but they also respond really well to touch.

For many of us, touch is something that comes with expectations, obligations, and trauma. Not often, especially when we are older, do we get enough touch to allow our bodies to feel they belong, are safe, and relaxed. Touch that is unconditional. Filled with love. It helps your body to restore and get out of fight or flight mode, enabling it to find balance again, detox, and this can support healing from chronic stress, and chronic health issues such as high cholesterol, diabetes, and heart problems.

The Massage element allows for very specific touch aimed at relaxing specific parts of the body where we store tension.

The Reiki energy, which is of a high vibration, allows your body to get into relaxation mode a lot faster than when you’re only having a physical massage. It supports the release of heavier, unpleasant energies, whether they be emotional, mental, or physical.

The Reiki element allows for a deep detoxification and full body relaxation process, and very specific and profound healing.

Therefore, Reiki Massage is really an excellent combination of therapies.

It goes without saying that any of those therapies, whether on their own or combined, are better done in total silence. When we are silent, we let go. We go to a deep and wise part of ourselves, that knows how to heal.
